Manal Kayiru-2 - Its Nothing Compared to the First Part

REVIEW

Manal Kayiru 2 is a Tamil drama movie direction by Madhan Kumar. The film is a sequel to the 1982 film, Manal Kayiru. Manal Kayiru 2 movie starring SV Shekhar, Ashwin Shekhar and Shamna Kasim in the lead roles.

The sequel to the 1982 super hit ‘Manal Kaiyiru 2’ has veterans S.Ve Sekhar, Kuriakose Ranga and Visu reprising their roles from the original and needless to say that the team has banked heavily on comedy which pays off to a certain extent.

STORY

In the first part Kittumani’s (SV Shekar) eight conditions for his wedding got shattered due to Naradhar Naidu’s (Visu) master plan that the former married Uma (Shanthi Krishna), who can’t even fulfill any of his expectations. The couple now has a daughter (Poorna), who lists out eight conditions for her wedding and this time too, Narathar Naidu comes into play and finds a bridegroom (Ashwin Shekar). Problems crop up between the mismatched couple and how they reconcile forms the rest of the screenplay.

PERFORMANCE

The major highlight of Manal Kayiru-2 is SV Shekar’s comic dialogues that despite the below par performances and stage drama effect, few one liners evoke genuine laughter. But those comedy sequences, which worked in bits and pieces aren’t enough to provide entertainment.

Had Manal Kayiru-2 got better actors and a director, who understand the present sensibilities, the film would have worked but now, this is nothing but an amateurish attempt with few comedy scenes as the only silver lining.

It is S. Ve. Sekhar’s show all the way and he gets the laughs every time he appears on screen with his own brand of perfect comedy timing. Next to Sekhar it is Poorna who scores with her pleasant looks and acting as the headstrong heroine. Ashwin Sekhar’s comedy timing works out well in the five or so ad films that are shown at regular intervals.

Jayashree makes a comeback as Sekhar’s wife and she has done her role neatly.  Visu has lost his magnetic voice due to ailments and it is really sad for die hard fans of his but the messages for today’s youth coming from him hit the mark thanks to his stature.   Delhi Ganesh, Kuriokose Ranga, Swaminathan, Jagan, George and M.S. Bhaskar all have their own LOL moments in the screenplay.

Cinematography by Gopi and editing by Athiyappan Siva passes muster while Dharan Kumar’s songs are  so so barring the kuthu number sung by Anirudh.  On the downside the conditions that Poorna forces on the groom are juvenile and far from reality and what should have been the anchor of the script becomes its major flaw.  This sequel probably would have worked better as a stage play and is no match for the original by Visu.
