Saivam - Saivam – a delicious feast!

Story: A large family lives in a village in their farm house. They grow domestic animals like goats, cows, chicken, etc., in this farm and Nasser has the habit for christening them all. One such pet is a cock that baby Sara is very fond of. On one occasion, Nasser’s sons and daughters arrive to their native place for the temple festival. During this time, a small accident happens and the priest opines that it is due to the family not sacrificing Sara’s pet cock, Papa, to their family deity. Soon after this, Papa goes missing and the entire family goes in search of it. Was the pet found? Was it sacrificed? All this forms the rest of Saivam.

Technicalities: The song Azhago Azhagu in GV Prakash’s music is the best in the album. His background score is certainly a big plus for Saivam. Nirav Shah has done a excellent job by handling the camera well and has captured the colourful village fest perfectly. The cinematographer should be lauded for handling both village and city-based subjects with ease and that proves his versatility. One classic example is the scene in which the cock is chased.

Acting: Nasser and baby Sara’s acting are simply superb. They have essayed the roles with such perfection and are completely at ease with it! George, who plays Nasser’s man servant, tickles our funny bones. Nasser’s son, Badshah, who made his debut in Saivam, manages to capture our attention.

Negatives: A very slow moving screenplay. Thank god the film’s run-time is two hours and hence it doesn’t test our patience too much.

Summary: The film gives a feeling that we are in a Chettinad village for two complete hours. There is not one single scene that even borders on vulgarity, which makes it a complete family fare. Kudos to director AL Vijay for it!

Verdict : Saivam – a delicious feast!

Stars : 3.5/5
