Sathriyan - This Gangster Movie Guarantees an One Time Watch!

REVIEW

Director SR Prabhakaran's Tamil movie Sathriyan starring Vikram Prabhu, Kavin, Manjima Mohan and Aishwarya Dutta is released today. Sathriyan is an action drama based on a real incident happened in Trichy. Besides direction, SR Prabhakaran has also written the story and screenplay for the movie. The movie, produced by Sendhil and Arjun Thiyagarajan under the banner Sathya Jyothi Films, has gotten a 'U' certificate. The supporting cast includes Sharath Lohitashwa, Aruldoss, R.K.Vijay Murugan, Soundararajan and Poster Nandakumar.

STORY

Samuthiram (Sharath Lohithashwa) is a dreaded don who is extremely powerful in Trichy. He is murdered by Shankar (Aruldas) with the support of the local minister and police. By killing Samuthiram, Shankar becomes the most powerful in the city.

Guna is a bold and powerful gangster belonging to Samuthiram’s group and he is loyal to Ravi (Vijay Murugan) the next in the line leader of the gang. Guna is deputed by Ravi to be the guard of Niranjana (Manjima Mohan), the daughter of Samuthiram. Niranjana starts loving Guna and the latter after initial resistance decides to reciprocate the girl’s feelings.

But Niranjana’s family is against this love. Ravi opposes Guna, loving the daughter of the man who has nurtured them. But Guna is not ready to give up his love as he has decided to reform and settle into family life. This forces Ravi to decide to kill Guna while Shankar is also already baying for Guna’s blood to avenge the murder of one of his gang members.

What happens to Guna ? Does he survive in his battle against the two dreadful gangs and save his love? You get the answers to these questions in the rest of the film.

PERFORMANCE

Three cheers to Vikram Prabhu, who proves that he can shoulder the burden of a whole movie on his shoulders. As a ruffian youth, he excels. His dialogue delivery and body language deserves special mention. Action comes naturally for him.

Manjima Mohan is not just cute and bubbly, but emotes well. A promising actress for Tamil cinema. She has a major role to play, which is a rarity for heroines in Tamil cinema these days. But the Malayalam influence in her Tamil dialogues is a turn off. Tara as Manjima’s mother has acted well, but again the Tamil pronunciation sounds odd. Aruldas and Vijay Murugan as gangsters and Aadukalam Naren as the police officer have done their part.

Sathriyan's two pillars of strengths are cinematographer Sivakumar Vijayan and music composer Yuvan Shankar Raja that even an ordinary scene gets elevates because of the duo's work. Sivakumar's lighting, shot division and color tone aptly justifies the gangster genre similarly, Yuvan's rerecording lifts each and every action sequences.

Though the film begins with an interesting setup of gang war, SR Prabhakaran struggles in shifting gears between romance and rowdyism till the intermission point. The director gets back his form with the interval block and post that the film engages us till the end. However the length of the film, weak climax and the preachy tone are the downers.
